Shogo Kawada (Male Student No. 5) reclined against the soft sofa on the ship. He was swaying slightly from the rough waves.
The room was fairly spacious for a small patrol ship. The ceiling itself was low, but the room must have been a couple square meters. There was a low table in the middle, and two sofas on each side, with Shogo sitting on the one away from the door.

Tension has been kind of lacking due to the number of characters, but it's really ramped up now. It's almost over, it's the main characters against the so far unstoppable antagonist, no real hint as to what either side's plans are, and with three of them, there's space for some death.

After four nights on the run, I was finally safe, tucked into bed and enjoying the deep, dreamless sleep of the dead…

This is such a perfect line for this book to open on. It's got everything: the compressed timescale, the poor wording (what person actually worried about being dead would think that?), the way everything that's happened apparently left no lasting impression...

Back to Shuya and the gang. Well, there isn't much of anyone else to be, is there?

Back to Shuya. It's raining. This is the first time it's rained, I believe. It's nice that it's been kept in reserve so long so it doesn't come off as overused.

When he heard the shattering sound, Shuya just thought, oh, one of those clumsy girls must have dropped a dish, but when the sound was followed by an argument, he got up from his bed.

Huh. Shuya is surprisingly on the ball. I wasn't expecting him to do anything until he heard the gun go off.

The chapter opens explaining that the lighthouse is includes a decent sized house in it, and that's where the girls have been living.

Yes, it was all a dream.

Time for a Mitsuko chapter.

Some chatting. The sound of someone moving. She'd even settle for the faint sound of someone desperately trying to hold his or her breath.

But not out of loneliness or anything. She just wants to get back on the killing wagon. She's now lost both Yoshimi's gun and Megumi's knife, and she really misses the gun.

"A house, huh." Shogo looked away from Shuya and squinted. "It's really not a good idea. As the number of zones decrease so do the number of houses. The moment someone needs something, they'll want to enter a house. Whether it's to eat or whatever."

Last time, there was a lot of wandering plot and foot dragging and finally, they decide to take Chloe out in their attempt to find the boys and Tori latches onto this chance to get out herself and insists on coming. I really like Tori.

Webcomics Recs

Hey everyone!

There's a yearly webcomics battle going on right now. There's too many to read all at once, so the best option is to just read whatever's opposite something you want to vote for. (It requires facebook to vote but doesn't seem to care how old the account is, so if that's an issue you can easily make a dummy account. Or, if your favorite webcomic is losing, a few dozen.)

Anyway, since that's on we're going to have a recs post now. Webcomics are free in every way except time, so these range from those I absolutely love to those I found enjoyable enough.

They're scoping out the school, having found the nearest safe border zone. So far, none of the other areas have been listed as forbidden.

Back with the secondary protagonists, Shinji has apparently done nothing for the last five hours but try to figure out why the phone isn't working. I guess the author is trying to keep everything in chronological order. Somehow the laptop's battery is still going strong.

The Awakening, Part 1

“Hello, Chloe.” Dr. Davidoff beamed his best kindly-old-man smile as he pushed the door wide. He wasn’t that old—maybe fifty—but in a movie, I’d cast him as the doddering absentminded scientist. It was an act I’m sure he’d worked on until he got it just right. The woman behind him had chic blond hair and a New York suit. I’d cast her as the mother of the nastiest girl in class. Which was cheating, because that’s exactly who she was. Mother of Victoria—Tori—Enright, the one housemate we’d left out of our plans when we’d escaped from Lyle House, and for good cause, considering she was one of the reasons I’d needed to escape.

Well, after reading that I'd say we all know what we're in for. The second book of the Darkest Powers trilogy, The Awakening, is much more up front about what we'll be getting that the opening of the first one, which tricked me with ghosts and creepiness. So, let's get on with this hatesummary.
